On the cover: Luminal gut bacteria (orange-yellow) were visualized in an ileal section from an uninfected C57BL/6 mouse using FISH. Cellular nuclei (blue) were stained using DAPI. Gut content contains bacteria and autofluorescent (yellow-green) food components. Following oral infection with T. gondii, overgrowth of Gram-negative bacteria is observed associated with translocation of bacteria to submucosal tissues contributing to ileal inflammation and ileal necrosis.
